Issue: If Bases Won't Be Closed, How Should Congress Cut Defense Budget?

Hundreds of billions of dollars of Pentagon cuts still loom via sequestration.

San Diego County’s military brass are breathing a sigh of relief. They won’t face base closings anytime soon.   

As The Associated Press reported Tuesday: “The Senate Armed Services readiness subcommittee … [rejected] the Defense Department's request to shutter installations and facilities in the United States that are no longer needed as the military branches cut the number of troops in uniform.”

But hundreds of billions of dollars of cuts still loom via sequestration, so North Island, Camp Pendleton, Miramar and the San Diego Navy base may still feel the budget pain.
