"Star Wars Reads Day" Comes to San Diego

By Luis Monteagudo Jr.

If all the juicy rumors about the new Star Wars movies have you hankering for a romp in your favorite galaxy far, far away, then Patch Goes Pop has something for you.

Saturday is the second annual Star Wars Reads Day, a day-long, national celebration of literacy and all things Star Wars.

This year’s event will be Saturday, Oct. 5, and will feature Star Wars fans, authors, and artists celebrating one of the most successful franchises in pop culture history.

Last year, more than two dozen authors and 1,500 costumed volunteers participated in over 1,200 Star Wars Reads Day events across North America.

San Diego Star Wars fans will have an extra treat because the local Star Wars Reads Day is being held in the brand new, Death Star of a library – the Central Library in downtown San Diego.

The Central Library will host “William Shakespeare’s Star Wars,” an interpretation of Star Wars by the San Diego Shakespeare Society. The presentation will be accompanied d by a silent screening of “Star Wars” Episode IV – A New Hope.”

If you’ve seen “Star Wars” dozens of times, this will be a great way to rediscover the saga. And if by miracle you’ve never seen it, or you know someone who hasn’t, then this will be a unique introduction to Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Obi Wan and Darth Vader.

Plus, if you haven’t had been to the library, which just opened this past weekend, this will be a perfect opportunity to check it out. It should be a great setting for a Star Wars Reads Day event. With it’s now iconic dome, the new library sort of looks like R2-D2 anyway.

The event runs from Noon to 2 p.m. in the Special Event rooms on the 9th floor. The Central Library is located at 330 Park Blvd., near Petco Park, in downtown San Diego.

See you there and may the Force be with you!
