Invasion of the Summer Movies

By Luis Monteagudo Jr.

Remember when the big summer movies came out in, oh, summer? Well, we haven’t even gotten to Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer, and already our local cineplexes are bursting to the seams with summer blockbusters.

In the past three weeks alone we’ve seen a Tom Cruise sci-fi flick, “Oblivion,” the latest chapter in the Marvel saga, “Iron Man 3” and J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek: Into Darkness.” But if you’re worried that all the good movies have already come out, don’t fret. Just think of it like following your favorite baseball team – it’s a long season, so pace yourself.

Here are some the summer movies Patch Goes Pop is looking forward to:

Fast and Furious 6: The Rock, Vin Diesel and the rest of the crew are back for more high-speed mayhem. Amazingly, this series actually seems to be getting better. May 24.

This is the End: A number of Hollywood’s top young comedians and actors, including Seth Rogan and James Franco, play themselves in this end-of-the-world comedy. Looks incredibly funny, at least in the trailers. June 12.

Man of Steel: The latest retelling of the Superman saga. The Christopher Reeves films still have a special place in our heart but this version seems like it will provide just the right mix of soaring spectacle and rousing emotions. June 14.

Monsters University: We can’t have a summer without a new Pixar film and this is the sequel to one of the company’s best films, “Monsters, Inc.” June 21.

World War Z: We’ve got bad vibes about this one after having seen too many CGI zombies in the trailers but we’ll still get on line to watch. The book was an engrossing spectacle portraying an America ravaged by a zombie horde and we’re curious to see if they can pull it off. June 21.

White House Down: If you already saw the first White House home invasion movie, then you’ve got to see this one so you can at least compare and contrast. Plus, it comes from today’s master of disaster, director Roland Emmerich. June 28.

The Lone Ranger: The team that invented a movie franchise based on an amusement park ride (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) tries to resurrect the legend of one of pop culture’s first true heroes. Plus, anything Johnny Depp is in should at least be interesting. Saddle up and ride! July 3.

Pacific Rim: This is the big one we’re waiting for. Giant monsters attack earth and humanity’s hope rests with equally giant robots piloted by specially-trained young soldiers. Directed by one of our best filmmakers today, Guillermo Del Toro. Can’t wait! July 12.

Wolverine: By this point, it will have been one whole month without a superhero movie. Enter Hugh Jackman and his claws to end our national nightmare. July 26.

Elysium: A few years ago, director Neill Blonkamp came out of nowhere to deliver one of the most intelligent, thrilling science fiction movies we’ve seen in years in "District 9.". He’s back, and it looks like he’s done it again with this tale of the haves versus the have-nots in the year 2154. Aug. 9.

Kick-Ass 2: This sequel to 2010’s sly, irreverent “Kick Ass” promises to up the stakes and the action. Aug. 16.

Well, that’s it. Whoa. That’s a lot of good movies. Start saving your money for the popcorn. Patch Goes Pop can be reached at patchgoespop@yahoo.com
