Hulkamania Coming to San Diego Sunday?

By Luis Monteagudo Jr.

Big time rasslin’ is coming to San Diego this Sunday with heroes and villains of TNA, including a rumored possible appearance by the big man himself, Hulk Hogan.

The occasion is “Bound for Glory,” a pay-per-view show that is being held at Viejas Arena on the campus of San Diego State University.

The Viejas Arena is no stranger to wrestling, having hosted events from TNA’s predecessor, WCW, years ago. But “Bound for Glory” is the first time TNA has held one of their large pay-per-view events in San Diego, which has wrestling fans on both sides of the border thanks to the popularity of Lucha Libre wrestling in Tijuana.

“We’re excited to be here,” said TNA spokesman Rafael Morffi. “One of the reasons we came to San Diego is because it’s a market that has supported wrestling over the years.”

TNA’s roster features wrestlers well-known by fans, such as Kurt Angle, Sting and Jeff Hardy. They will  be in matches at “Bound for Glory.” But it’s the sport’s biggest name, Hulk Hogan, who many fans will be hoping to see.

Hogan’s contract expired with TNA but there is speculation he will show up to interfere in the main event, the World Heavyweight Championship between the champion, Bully Ray, and challenger “The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles. The chances Hulk Hogan shows up are good, considering Bully Ray threatened on TNA’s Thursday night television broadcast to beat Hogan up if he interferes in the match. And, to spice up things, the match was made a no disqualification match Thursday night.

Fans of Mexican-style Lucha Libre wrestling will also have something to look forward to as “Bound for Glory” features what’s certain to be a high-flying, crowd-pleasing Ultimate X Match involving five wrestlers.

The pay-per-view starts at 5 p.m. local time. It is available on cable and satellite, and tickets for Viejas Arena were still available as of Friday morning. There will also be a fan interaction event with the wrestlers Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at the San Diego Mariott in Mission Valley. Tickets are required for that event and are available on TNA’s website at www.impactwrestling.com.
