Poll: Should Students and Teachers be Facebook Friends?

Almost any teacher with a profile can tell you, friend requests from students are common. But is accepting a friend request from a student a risk for teachers?

With the end of another school year, let's reflect on teachers and students.

Most of the relationships are just right, but inappropiate student-teacher relationships have been in the news and courtrooms for years. Are cyber relationships on Facebook a different story?

According to the Huffington Post, “some teachers say social media – in particular Facebook – can be a vital educational resource if used appropriately, especially because it's a primary means of communication for today's youngsters.”

However, that same article also reported a teacher in New York "friended several female students and wrote comments including 'this is sexy' under their photos."  And "a substitute teacher sent a message to a student saying that her boyfriend did not ‘deserve a beautiful girl like you.’"

What do you think? What do your kids think? If you're a teacher, what are your feelings? Take our poll, and leave us your comments.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
