Poll: How Would Jesus Vote on the Paul Ryan Budget Plan in Congress?

Roman Catholic nuns hit the road in bus tour to lobby against federal cuts in social services.

Religious conservatives have long lobbied Washington on behalf of their causes—bans on abortion or same-sex marriage, for example. Now religious liberals are making their voices heard. The latest case: A nine-state bus tour by Catholic nuns in opposition to Republican budget proposals spearheaded by Rep. Paul Ryan that would cut federal spending on socal programs. The Vatican does not approve of the bus tour (with its own website). But the 14 sisters are unswayed. Where does God stand?

Are you kidding me? How does God feel about the Republican budget? Are you serious? This has got to be the dumbest poll question ever. I'm stunned.

I vote: Most absurd poll ever

Article Title "Poll: How Would Jesus Vote on the Paul Ryan Budget Plan in Congress?" and poll "How would God vote on the Republican budget plan in Congress?" are different, unless you think Jesus and God are the same entity.

Why are you stunned? Republicans frequently use religion to voice their opposition to a variety of policies. Seems like this one would be difficult for them to justify.

Jesus would set Paul Ryan on fire & send him straight to hell !!! I suppose the real question is whether the divinely delusional would do the charitable & Christian thing by standing up for the less fortunate in the face of massive cuts to our social safety net !. Or would the bible based bigots fall in lockstep behind their conservative corporate masters & tea party fanatics in creating an even bigger & widening gap between the haves & the have nots in our society ? My thinking is that the faithful (pick any faith) are a lot less charitable & tolerant than their publicists would have you believe. For many when it comes to the poor & less fortunate folks their idea of being their brothers keeper,is to keep their brothers incarcerated ! Don't forget that this Saturday & Sunday,June 23rd & 24th is "Burn Your Neighbor's Holy Book Weekend / Interfaith Scavenger Hunt & inquisition" fun for the entire family ! Cast the first stone at the dunking tank - drown a witch & win valuable prizes ! No heretics or heathens allowed ! By the way did you know that Jesus is the only savior that can use his hand like a whistle ? Then at the end of his act for his encore he'd walk on the water & then turn it into wine ! The crowd would go wild, though it probably had something to do with drinking all that wine !!

Ken Stone is apparently at the bottom of the barrel with this question and those that respond are there in the slime with him.

Personally I believe this poll is a noble one. When you look at what the Ryan Budget contains, you find out that seniors would pay more for health care, the elderly and disabled would lose Medicaid coverage, 30 million Americans would lose health coverage, corporations and the rich would get a 3 TRILLION DOLLAR TAX CUT, while 62 percent of its spending cuts come from safety net programs. The cuts are unjustified and wrong and draconian in nature. I don’t believe anyone (including Jesus or God), given the ability to vote on such measures, would vote to increase the suffering of the needy. It seems to me that the Ryan Budget and its supporters have lost their moral compass in life.

Per Albert Camus quote: “I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is.”

Camus was awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize for Literature for bringing to light the PROBLEMS OF THE HUMAN CONSCIENCE IN OUR TIMES. He was the second-youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the first African-born writer to receive the award.

Personally, I would say that Jesus made his position on this general topic quite clear.
In the Bible, there is a mention of it being easier for a camel to pass though the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Many wealthy people who would support the Ryan budget, and no tax increases on themselves (BTW - Mitt got a tax deduction of $77,000 for his wife's horse) must be carrying an industrial-size Pam spray can for lubing up prior to death in the belief that they can, Evel Knievel-style, make it through that needle's eye. When I asked a friend about his view on Luke 14:33 - "In the same way any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple," the friend said, "Well, I don't want to be a DISCIPLE, just a Christian!" I would ask wealthy people to fear not. You will still be wealthy after an overhaul of the tax code. NO ONE in government should ever attempt to write into civil law that, with regard to the poor or infirm, you MUST act as Christ instructed you to do. That decision must remain your personal decision, and yours alone. I assume, at least on the issue of keeping all your money, you really do believe in the separation of church and state.

Non-Christians may or may not have to resort to hypocrisy, depending on their religious beliefs, or lack thereof.

You are antagonistic to the question, but you don't explain why. Humor me with an explanation.

Ron, once again you made a bad assumption.
I am not a religious person, but I do respect those who are. I believe living your life as most, not all, of the Ten Commandments specify is noble and leads to a better life.for all. I believe bringing God into a political argument is a cheap way to do your job and indicates you are out of ideas and are at the bottom of the barrel. I have no way of knowing if there is a God, but often wonder how such an in-imaginable complex body, that has an infinite number of inter- dependent variables could develop and function just based on chance. I will probably never know since I am headed for hell, if there is one.
Dave Fenner June 26, 2012 at 04:56 pm
I feel bad that this question was presented, and it is so impossible to answer, especially, in the simplistic way it was phrased. And some of the responses have been equally shallow minded. I hope we can do better than this. Doug, I would also like to contribute to your punctuation mark fund raising for "Things I Learned". Man, I hope we can get some serious discussion going, with intelligent questions, and a bit more literacy in the responses.

This is stupid. Jesus never got involved in politics. When people wanted to make him king, he ran away. He has his own agenda and it's far superior than anything human governments could ever accomplish. Besides human governments have had their day, they're all crumbling; it'll be over soon enough.
Steven Bartholow (Editor) June 28, 2012 at 03:13 pm
Life is politics- just the things Jesus talked about were political in nature, whether or not he wanted to get into "politics." Interesting article on the matter: http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/creech/060314
