Wendell Amidon Dies at 97; Was a Navy Veteran of WWII

He made several California communities, including Coronado, home, before settling in Palm Desert.

Wendell H. Amidon, a Navy veteran who logged time in World War II and Korea, died July 6, four months shy of his 98th birthday, according to the Desert Sun in Palm Springs.

The Massachusetts native didn't wait for Pearl Harbor—he joined the Navy when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. He retired as a lieutenant commander.

The one-time Coronado resident, known as Joe, settled in several California communities after his military service, before deciding to make Palm Desert his home.

The father of four sold life insurance and supported several charities and community groups, including the Navy League.
