Pearl J. Hastings Dies at 92; Worked at Mom's Old-Time Coronado Cafe

Her love of Coronado helped keep Pearl in the San Diego area, where she remained for the rest of her life after arriving in 1939.

Coronado's charms seduced Pearl Hastings into staying in California, where she moved almost 75 years ago.

The daughter of Italian immigrants was raised in Chicago, where as a waitress she came across the likes of Albert Einstein and 1930s movie star Rudy Vallee, who took her on a date. She also was a nightclub singer.

But her time in Coronado coincided with World War II and she worked in her mother's coffee shop, Gerry's, at 10th Street and Orange Avenue, sharing “the heartaches caused by war.”

The Ramona resident died June 24, according to Legacy.com. She was 92.

The mother of three moved to Clairemont after she married and to Ramona in 1984. Services are planned for 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at First Congregational Church on 8th Street off D Street in Ramona.
