Travel Log: USS Coronado's Travels to Namesake City

The USS Coronado (LCS-4), now on her way with a stop for maintenance in Mayport, FL, and a journey through the Panama Canal, is ultimately headed to her namesake city of Coronado, where she will be commissioned on April 5, 2014.

The Navy's fourth littoral combat ship, she is noted for her unique hull design and her chameleon-like capability to change her mission. She can travel swiftly and stealthily in shallow waters or on the open ocean supporting mine, undersea, and surface warfare.

Her two crews, the BLUE crew under the command CDR John Kochendorfer and the Gold crew under the command of CDR.Shawn Johnston, periodically will rotate their duties to operate the ship. She is expected to enter San Diego waters in late March.

The commissioning event is expected to attract 5000-6000 attendees, including many naval and civilian dignitaries. You, too, can be a part of this history making event. Go to the Commissioning Committee website at to learn how you can become involved.
