Crew of USS Stockdale Belatedly Receives Food Service Award

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the award winners March 22, but the crew of the Stockdale was unable to accept the award until recently returning to port.

The crew of the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale was belatedly presented a trophy for food-service excellence after returning to San Diego from a 10-month extended deployment.

The crew received the runner-up trophy for the 2013 Edward F. Ney Memorial Award for Food Service Excellence in the medium afloat category during a ceremony on board the ship on Dec. 10.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the award winners March 22, but the crew was unable to accept the award until recently returning to port.

Rear Adm. Vincent L. Griffith, commander, Navy Supply Global Logistics Support, presented the award to the ship's food service division and congratulated the crew on a highly successful deployment.

"We were thrilled upon hearing the news," said Cmdr. Bo Johns, Stockdale's commanding officer. "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our culinary specialists, food service attendants and supply team as a whole."
