The Thursday, but 'tis true: A Florida-based beach fan, dubbed Dr. Beach, has named Coronado the top beach in the U.S. for 2012.
Here's his assessment:
The beach is popular for swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and beachcombers. The beach is very flat, making it great for skim boarding and walking, and the sand has a silvery sheen because of the presence of mica ... A great team of lifeguards stands watch.
Various Coronado businesses and organizations responded via Twitter Friday morning as the designation became official, including the and .
The city tweeted, “Can't share this enough! Dr. Beach places #Coronado's wide, sandy beach at the top of this year's list.”
Officials from the sent a shout out to Dr. Beach. “Thank you @drbeach_top10 for naming Coronado the #1 Beach in America.”
added, “It’s a proud day for Coronado! We were just named the #1 Beach in the United States by Dr. Beach!”
Another hotel, , tweeted, “Coronado Beach was just named the BEST BEACH in the nation by Dr. Beach. Come visit and enjoy it for yourself!”
Robert Smyth, from , said on the site, “Coronado ranked #1 Beach in Nation Been telling people this for 20 years...but now a bit bummed everyone will know.”
Well, really for the most part they did, as the community is a tourist mecca cited for its landmarks – from the iconic resort hotel to – and for its beach, which tourism magazines and cable channels have long pointed to as one of the nation's best.
In fact, Dr. Beach, better known as Dr. Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University, ranked Coronado as , a good sign, one observer noted, that the community would rise to the top this year.
