Leave the Plastic Bags Behind

The county is encouraging use of reusable bags–find out where you can get some free in Coronado Thursday.

 

How many plastic bags are out there? According to San Diego Coastkeeper, people in this region alone use more than 1.7 billion plastic bags each year – about 500 per person. 

Residents can try to change that Thursday, when San Diego County takes part in “Day Without a Bag,” to encourage residents to give up disposable bags.

Numerous locations will be distributing reusable bags, which can come in handy for the holidays.

To help their shoppers remember, several grocers such as and  – both with Coronado locations – are providing drawings for $25 gift certificates to those using reusable bags in their stores.

Aside from those big chains, reusable bags also will be given out at and , while supplies last.

Other participating grocery stores and retailers in the county include: 

  • 99 Cent Only Stores
  • Jimbo’s…Naturally!
  • Ralphs
  • Target
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Whole Foods  

According to www.NoBagDaySD.org, the purpose of the event is to “educate and raise awareness of the need to keep communities, waterways and beaches clean via litter prevention and promotion of a ‘greener’ holiday season through reuse.” 

“This is a region-wide event to support a habit change,” said coordinator Jacy Bolden.

The event is being sponsored by Coastkeeper, the Surfrider Foundation and more.
