THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR POWER PLANT GOES LIVE

California May Surpass 2020 Renewable Energy Requirements

SAN DIEGO (February 26, 2014) – Being a leader in the renewable energy, California has continued to work diligently to fulfill the 2020 renewable energy electricity production requirement of 33 percent.  On February 13, the Ivanhpah solar power plant went live in the Mojave Desert on the border of California and Nevada. Spanning across 3,500 acres, the Ivanpah power plant is the largest solar power plant in the world.

This power plant generates a total of 392 megawatts of solar power, enough electricity for 140,000 California homes. That would avoid 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is equal to removing 72,000 vehicles off the road.

Residential solar power continues to shine throughout California as well. Cash-back solar initiatives, like the California Solar Initiative, helped bring down the cost of solar, which is now thriving despite a state rebate. A 30 percent federal tax credit is still applicable through 2016, where it then drops to 10 percent. These incentives, combined with the continually decreasing price of solar, has increased the number of homeowners in Southern California who declare energy independence from the dirty utility.

San Diego, being one of the sunniest cities in the world, took full advantage of the incentives and our sunshine. Environmental California’s last two solar cities reports named San Diego the top solar city in California, America’s top solar state. Sullivan Solar Power, a local solar company and number one installer in the San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) territory, is committed to assisting in California’s renewable energy goals.  In addition to standard residential and commercial installations, to help fulfill their commitment Sullivan has partnered with the nonprofit, Grid Alternatives, to give low income homeowners free solar installations.  Together, Grid Alternatives and Sullivan Solar Power are providing underprivileged families the ability to save money and protect the environment.
