SAN DIEGANS LOOK FOR AN ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION TO THE PROPOSED POWER PLANT

Sullivan Solar Power offers Renewable Energy Solutions for Otay Mesa Residents

OTAY MESA (February 17, 2014) – Last week the California Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved the 25-year, $1.6 billion Pio Pico natural gas power plant in Otay Mesa.  Although the proposal was unanimously denied back in March of 2013, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) resubmitted for approval after the official shut down of the San Onofre Nnuclear Generating Station (SONGS) power plant in June 2014. , whichThe San Onofre power plant had supplied San Diego one fifth of its energy needs, so SDG&E claimsing that San Diego needed another reliable source of power.

Rate payers would foot the $1.6 billion dollar investment. Building another “peaker” power plant like this one is counterproductive to California’s progressive clean renewable energy, clean air, and  clean environment goals.  The $1.6 billion dollar investmenFor that amount of money, solar power could be installed across the county, t could be much better spent on investingaiding our state in reaching in California’s 2020 renewable energy goals of 33 percent, while providing local jobs, clear air and a sustainable future. %.

"I'm really disappointed that the community's voice wasn't heard," said Franco Garcia, who is with the Environmental Health Coalition, "So basically what you're doing is you're adding more pollution into an already polluted area. It sends us completely down the wrong path [and] it’s going to cost money.”

However, SDG&E makes the claim that renewable energy needs a backup in case it fails claiming the plant is essential for energy needs to be met while they work towards their own renewable energy requirements.  SDG&E’s efforts to shift to renewable sources of energy does not seem to be a top priority, since they have given themselves a contract for the plant that is locked in for 25 years.  Considering the renewable energy goals that need to be met by 2020, 25 years is an awfully long time for a dirty power plant to be producing and being paid off; ultimately passing the burden of environmental pollution and payments on to future generations.  Although natural gas is cleaner burning than coal, it is estimated that the Pio Pico plant will emit 685,626 tons of carbon dioxide every year. Not only is the extra power dirty and unnecessary, it will be built in an industrial area of Otay Mesa that is right next to a juvenile detention facility and residential housing.  Residents have voiced their concern about air quality and asthma problems in their children, but their protests went unheard.   Clean energy options, like solar, would not contribute to air quality problems and would provide residents with a reliable source of clean energy.

Installing more renewable energy in California is a movement in the right direction, away from dirty non-renewable energy resources like coal, gas, and oil.  It is often unrealized how much energy is available from the sun each day.  The amount of sunlight energy the earth receives in one hour is enough energy to power the world’s energy needs for one year.

“Solar is a no-brainer so it’s not a surprise it continues to be America’s fastest-growing industry,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power, “BuildingA newanother non-renewable energy power plant is a step backwards from propelling our society into a sustainable, energy independent future.”
