Vets to Honor Ex-SEALs Woods and Doherty at Mt. Soledad on Memorial Day

Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were credited with saving several lives when they were killed in September 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya.

The former Navy SEALs who died in the attack on the Libyan consulate last year will be honored on Memorial Day with plaques at the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, according to the La Jolla Light.

Tyrone Woods of Imperial Beach and Glen Doherty of Encinitas were part of a  contract security team called in to aid those in the consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012.

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday May 27, 2013 at the Mt. Soledad cross, 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive So. Trolley service will be available, from the Mt. Soledad Presbyterian Church and the French American School, both in the 6500 block of Soledad Mountain Rd.

Navy SEAL Capt. Jason Ehret is set to speak, the report said.

Woods, 41, and Doherty, 42, were part of a team credited with saving lives in the attack by buying time for several people to safely escape the consulate. Two others died, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and a diplomatic aide, Sean Smith.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, has proposed another honor for Woods and Doherty – honoring them with a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award from the legislature.
