It's a day of "Do-Good." Register to vote, volunteer at the Playhouse and build character!

1. Need service hours, an unpaid internship, or just want to help?  Volunteer at the Coronado Playhouse. Help make costumes or sets. Use your tech abilities for lighting and sound. Be an usher and assist people in finding their seats. The Playhouse is always looking for volunteers, so give back to your community and sign up!

2. Let your voice be heard! Hurry, today is the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 2 midterm elections. Don't know if you're registered already or need a registration form? Visit the San Diego Registrar of Voters site for all the resources.

3. Sport Pink: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so wear a pink ribbon, paint your nails a pretty pinky hue, or send your husband to work with a rose-colored tie! Need to convince your man that it's ok to wear pink? Tell him the NFL does it! Stay tuned for more ways to become involved in breast cancer awareness.

4. It's "Character Counts" Week: The School Board adopted the following "Six Pillars of Character" as the foundation of education in Coronado: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. And the City Council has proclaimed Oct. 17-23 "Character Counts Week." The School Board, Chamber of Commerce and City Council are urging families and citizens to support and promote the Six Pillars of Character this week. Look for signs around town reminding us to be our best selves, and think about how you can apply these six pillars to the community of Coronado.

5. We've all heard of John Mayer, but what about John Mayo? Mayo, who hails from New York, was issued the very first patent for plywood on Dec. 26, 1865. Without him, we may have never had sturdy houses, beautiful furniture or some fighter aircraft!
