Parade of Flight, Centennial Celebration Pack Coronado

Navy event attracts unprecedented crowds and causes gridlock on the Coronado bridge and local streets.

Tens of thousands of people packed San Diego Bay and Coronado for the Centennial celebration of the U.S. Navy in San Diego and the airshow Saturday afternoon.

Reports from people on the bridge said it took more than an hour to cross around noon, an hour before the airshow, and all traffic entering Coronado was diverted to Interstate 5 and State Route 75 through Imperial Beach and the Silver Strand.

Concrete dividers on the bridge were removed to create a third lane of eastbound traffic for spectators leaving the event, a CHP official said.
