New Coronado police Chief Jon Froomin's family helped make his arrival in the city official Tuesday.

When Froomin was sworn in as Coronado’s new chief of police before the City Council, his wife Dana pinned his badge on his chest and his three children affixed  his gold bars on his collar.

City Manager Blair King called Froomin a “good fit” for the community.

“We have high expectations for him and expect him to do well,” King said.

For his part, Froomin said he is “thrilled to be here in Coronado.” He sees his new job as a capstone for his career.

“I’ve worked for 30 years for this moment,” he said.

Froomin was selected last month from 130 applicants. He will oversee a staff of 87, including 44 sworn officers, and manage a $9 million budget. He replaces Louis Scanlon, who retired after six years in Coronado.

Froomin, 46, began his stint with the Foster City police force as a youth explorer in 1983. Once he chose a career in law enforcement, he worked his way up through the ranks at the department from motorcycle officer to captain.

All along, he said his goal was to head a department in a service-oriented community.

“I’m looking forward to good times working with the city and the residents in the community,” he said.

He will get an opportunity to meet with many of them next month.

Councilwoman Barbara Denny invited Froomin to discuss crime prevention at her June 11 Speak Out Coronado event.
