A Plea to Navy Families: Can You Help the Genestas?

Come up with creative ideas to raise funds for the family of John Genesta, a veteran who served in Vietnam.

Ed. note: A version of this story originally appeared in Laguna Beach Patch.

The Genesta family is going through a very dark time.

On June 1, U.S. Navy veteran and artist John Genesta fell off a ladder and suffered multiple injuries. Because the local VA Medical Center was filled to capacity, it had to turn away Genesta.

The Laguna Beach veteran was forced to seek medical attention at another hospital. Now, his medical bills are near $1 million.

Due to the accident, Genesta has disabilities. Lisa, his wife, cannot work due to the fact that she suffers from two diseases. The couple may be forced to leave their home.

A September benefit concert, by local musicians, artists, businesses, family and friends, raised $7,000.

A friend offered this statement from the Genesta family, John, Lisa and Adam:

“Words do not begin to describe the feelings that we hold in our hearts for all of our friends ... As we face leaving our home and town, we realize that we will be hard-pressed to find another Laguna Beach. This caring beach community performs miracles.”

Individuals who wish to offer an additional donation can send it to the Genesta family, P.O. Box 1308, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. Please make checks payable to Lisa Genesta. Please call (949) 497-1085 if you wish to use a credit card.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
