Hundreds Line 4th Street for Farewell to Fallen SEAL

Procession honors Darrik Benson, one of 30 servicemen who died in Afghanistan earlier this month. Another SEAL will be remembered Tuesday.

The first of two local funeral processions this week to honor took place Monday morning.

Virginia resident Darrik Benson, 28, was who died in the crash, caused by a Taliban insurgent. Benson will be laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Pt. Loma.

The procession made its way from North Island Naval Air Station along Fourth Street, where classes from Coronado schools lined the blocks leading up to Orange Avenue.

The procession for another SEAL killed in the attack, Jesse Pittman, is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday. He'll also be interred at Fort Rosecrans. In recent days, services have been taking place throughout the country for those who died.

Benson and Pittman were native Northern Californians. They trained in Coronado as part of their preparation as SEALs.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
