Hundreds Line 4th Street for Farewell to Fallen SEAL

Procession honors Darrik Benson, one of 30 servicemen who died in Afghanistan earlier this month. Another SEAL will be remembered Tuesday.

The first of two local funeral processions this week to honor took place Monday morning.

Virginia resident Darrik Benson, 28, was who died in the crash, caused by a Taliban insurgent. Benson will be laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Pt. Loma.

The procession made its way from North Island Naval Air Station along Fourth Street, where classes from Coronado schools lined the blocks leading up to Orange Avenue.

The procession for another SEAL killed in the attack, Jesse Pittman, is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday. He'll also be interred at Fort Rosecrans. In recent days, services have been taking place throughout the country for those who died.

Benson and Pittman were native Northern Californians. They trained in Coronado as part of their preparation as SEALs.

rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 03:47 AM
Actually, I served on CV-62. I don't honor war; I don't teach the youth to honor it. Emails were NOT sent to all parents, as I am one of them! How dare you, to say I should allow the district to put my child potentially in harms way? The SEAL's are hunted and their enemy is indiscriminant! How dare I, indeed, how dare you! Mind your own child, I'll mind mine.
red123 August 30, 2011 at 03:59 AM
maybe you are living in the wrong town!
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 04:09 AM
No, thank you, I'll stay and be free to change this one. Are you promoting freedom or fascism? You see, I live in America, where one gets to choose to come or go, to place their hand over their heart or not and what, if any, flag to wave! In my heart is love, not war, and that's what I teach the youth. And you? Never mind, it's rhetorical.
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:09 AM
rasmarcus you must be a coward and realized the error of your ways. you deleted your comments clearly bc you know they are wrong. hmmm
ADawnEvolution August 30, 2011 at 04:14 AM
rasmarcus we are not honoring war but honoring those who serve so we can bicker back and forth on the internet. I don't have a problem with my child paying honor to a real hero. She needs to know what a real hero is and it isn't a person who gets paid millions of dollars to play a game or act in a movie. So you were afraid that a terrorist would target to memorial escort and your child would be harmed. I can understand, but as you and your family cower mine will stand strongly and honor those who have honored us.
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:15 AM
rasmarcus, you deleted you message calling our fallen soldier a "volunteer". also said how dare our school "force" our kids down to fourth to salute our deceased soldier. said the kids were "told" to hold their hand over their heart or hold a flag. care to repost your post???
Debbie August 30, 2011 at 04:16 AM
rasmarcus....we are honoring our brave heroes who sacrificed thier lives defending your freedoms, my freedoms, the freedoms we have in America. God bless those teachers for teaching our children to honor our brave warriors who gave their final breath serving, sacrificing so all Americans could live free. Thank you Darrick for your service and sacrifice, thank you to the Benson family for giving thier very best. My condolences, love and support are there for you. We will never forget. Actually, the first comment left out "How dare I, indeed, how dare you! Mind your own child, I'll mind mine." I felt it was important to add, so I deleted and reposted it... just for you, you're welcome. BTW, red123, a coward would not post with his real name. It takes a confident man to be willing to defend his family from dictators who would force his children to honor war, against his heart! -RasMarcus
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:23 AM
much love and heartfelt feeling to you and your family debbie. i hope rasmarcus leaves this conversation at peace.
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 04:30 AM
I did, added some too! Just for you, see above.
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:31 AM
that;s not the post i was talking about. your first post was a huge insult to all forces in general and you deleted it, you are the coward.
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 04:36 AM
You used the words "we" and "freedoms", however, you failed to discuss the fact that the children were not there of their own free will, they were forced to attend and told what to do, and parents weren't notified! Yet, you used the word "freedom" three times in your rhetoric to me; however, our children had none today.

RasMarcus "It takes a confident man to be willing to defend his family from dictators who would force his children to honor war, against his heart!" Boy what courage, you'd think were standing up to Castro, Khaddafi, or Kim Jung Ill...instead you are an UNGRATEFUL coward pretending that you are risking something. You live under the security that greater men than yourself has provided you. YOU ARE WELCOME...
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:38 AM
yeah, already seen that one. that's not ur original post. why don't you put that one back up?
red123 August 30, 2011 at 04:41 AM
clearly you aren't going to put it up so i am done with you. sorry you can not appreciate the people who fight for your freedom. very unfortunate. maybe you should go find another flag to hold up
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 04:56 AM
Resorting to falsehoods to bolster your position won't work. I've deleted nothing, I've posted, reposted and stand behind everything I've written tonight! I've pulled no punches, I've disrespected no one, and I’ve only been honest, forthright and from the heart. Sorry ‘red123’, I'm not the Coronadoian you'd have me be, I am however, proud to be an American and with all intent and purpose will work encourage my country to be far more humble. FYI, the flag I wave is one of love, unity and oneness, not of separation, division and conquer.
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 05:17 AM
"real hero is and it isn't a person who gets paid millions of dollars to play a game or act in a movie" Nor do we celebrate those "heroes". Actually our heroes repel war, fight injustice and back down oppressors through non-violence, as the honorable Dr. Martin Luther King III was forced to do! Like Mandela was held to, and like Stephen Biko, Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa died doing! Who has been held liable for the injustices committed by Americans? "The definition of hero remains subjective. What is extraordinary can be debated. Courage is in the eye of the beholder. Greatness of soul is elusive. The twentieth century taught us well that leaders once thought heroes can turn out to be tyrants." - Peter H. Gibbon (Dr. Gibbon has traveled around the country talking to general audiences and to middle and high school students about heroism. In assemblies and individual literature and history classes, he has talked to students in public, private, and parochial schools in twenty states over the last several years.)

RasMarcus- here's a quote for you, "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." — John Stuart Mill or this one..."Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Jesus ;)
ADawnEvolution August 30, 2011 at 05:48 AM
RasMarcus- "the flag I wave is one of love, unity and oneness, not of separation, division and conquer." Obviously you haven't been paying attention to those who wish to see all of us dead or under submission. Here are a few books you might want to read: "In the Words of Our Enemies" Babbin "Architect of Global Jihad" Lia "Warrant for Terror" Bar "Knowing the Enemy" Habeck "The Al Qaeda Reader" Ibrahim "Islamic Imperialism" Karsh "The Shia Revival" Nasr "Because They Hate" Gabriel "Culture and Conflict in the Middle East" Salzman If you want more I have more to recommend, but this should get you started...
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 05:51 AM
"John Stuart Mill", a British philosopher, economist and civil servant. Not someone I would listen to or respect, ever! Jesus is really not one you should be quoting in this context; considering the oil, profits and greed that lay as the foundation of the middle-east conflict.
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 06:11 AM
You, in fact, are incorrect! Tell us what children were given an option? Which children were given permission? Mine was not! Paste the email that was sent to parents to this comment thread so, I, and other conscious parents, can follow up correctly. The notification on Edlin was posted THIS MORNING!!! So I dated myself, yes, the Indy was de-commed a year after I de-enlisted, so.... what exactly does that mean? "Let's not pretend you've been respectful" - How? "pompous arrogance" - By being honest? By being concerned about what my child is taught OUTSIDE of school curriculum? More parents should be so pompous and arrogant; we'd be living in a much better world. Pompous and arrogant is the belief that all children should honor war, or the assassins born from it.
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 06:28 AM
Thank you for posting the email. What time was it sent? I see it's dated today. I really did not receive it. Additionally, I don't see an option for students or parents to opt-out, do you? Should you? Shouldn't I?
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 01:34 PM
"It wasn't a rally. It wasn't a riot. It was 10 minutes of peace and respect. What does that glorify?" Let's not kid ourselves, the man was honored and glorified because he assonated a criminal... which is not an example of a hero or what a hero does in our lives. "I wonder, since you brought up MLK, Gandhi, Mother Theresa... Would you have been ok with children leaving school to attend funeral processions for them?" Only if I were notified ahead of time, and more importantly, I would respect anyone who decided not to attend. "why do you indicate you live in Coronado when it appears you claim IB as your residence" --- Not sure where you're getting your intel or where you are going with this.... "Dude, you've got problems if you think that being pompous and arrogant is a good thing, especially when it comes to parenting." How rich! Calling me pompous and arrogant... now that's rich, especially coming from anyone in Coronado! Pompous and arrogant is forcing school children to be used as propaganda, and not giving them an option. Humility is a trait Coronadoians could use a strong dose of...
rasmarcus August 30, 2011 at 01:42 PM
Thank you for your honesty. A half sent email at 9:00am the day of the event is NOT adequate notification to parents! The notification was clearly lacking an option to out-out, and the media printed the pictures and story as if the children were given a choice. They were not! "It was quiet. It was solemn. It wasn't about war." -BS! Check the media reports! It's all about honoring someone who killed someone who was hated, in the name of War. That's my argument and anyone who thinks I'm arrogant is not willing to be honest with him or herself or their children.

RasMarcus-Darrik Benson died in Afghanistan...incase you didn't know but there isn't any oil in Afghanistan. Even if you are a true pacifist, rather than just anti-American, you have to acknowledge that pacifism failed the Tibetans. Pacifism only works if your adversary is unwilling to do unspeakable harm to those in their way. This is not the case with our adversary. They will kill newborns in their sleep if it promotes their goal. As for me and my family we acknowledge this truth.

Today's procession along 4th for 2nd fallen SEAL set for 10:30 a.m. Moved up by about a half hour.
christine howell August 30, 2011 at 04:59 PM
Sigh.....please let this soldier rest in peace, please do not fuel this gentleman anymore.
Vicki Inghram August 30, 2011 at 05:05 PM

Vicki Inghram August 30, 2011 at 10:31 PM
