Coronado Schools Are Open Today; Residents Should Stay Off Beaches

After an 8.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan, a tsunami advisory has been issued in Coronado. As of now, schools are open. Residents are advised to stay off the beaches.

All are open today. District officials are working closely with the and the office of Emergency Services to monitor any changes in safety conditions due to the effects of the .

At this time the surf swell is not expected to be a safety concern for Coronado schools or buildings of any kind. Residents are being asked to stay off the beach this morning.

“The currents that are going to be produced are going to be really strong and there could be very significant changes in the water levels on the coast,” said meteorologist Don Whitlow for San Diego National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service said tsunami wave heights reached 2.8 feet in La Jolla, 2.6 feet in Imperial Beach, and 1.2 feet at San Diego Navy Pier.

The NWS estimated the tsunami's California arrival time at 8:47 a.m. Friday at the California-Mexico border, 8:41 a.m. in La Jolla, 8:32 a.m. in San Pedro and 8:17 a.m. in Santa Barbara. For more estimated arrival times, click here.
