A Look Inside the Renovated Spreckels Mansion

As the Coronado Historical Association prepares to host a tour of the renovated Spreckels mansion, a peek into the revamped mansion has been offered as a real estate amuse bouche of sorts.

One bedroom, the kitchen and a dining room, media room and bathroom are offered up for view in a report by U-T San Diego on changes in the sprawling 12,750 square-foot house. The Ocean Boulevard property is on the market for nearly $17 million.

The upcoming tour, set for 4-7 p.m. May 31, costs $40. Tickets are available at CoronadoHistory.org.

The transformation of the house began in the months after the July 2011 deaths of Rebecca Zahau, 32, and Max Shacknai, 6. Zahau was found dead on the mansion's grounds, while Max died days after a fall from a Spreckels staircase.

Authorities determined that Zahau committed suicide, despite being found nude and bound. Max's fall was accidental, police said. Zahau was homeowner Jonah Shacknai's girlfriend, while Max was his son.
