Bridge Cited Among Spans in U.S. in Need of Careful Inspection

Known as fracture-critical bridges, spans like the San Diego-Coronado Bridge can collapse in the event of a structural failure, according to Business Week magazine.

Coronado's bridge, along with spans in Oregon, New York and New Jersey, must be inspected consistently to prevent disasters like the 2007 Minnesota bridge collapse that killed 13.

Trouble is, according to Business Week magazine, in a time of government cutbacks, those inspections are less and less likely. A bill extending funding expires on March 31.

Bridges should be inspected at least every two years, but some conditions call for more frequent checks.
