66-Year-Old Coronado Man Killed in I-5 Crash

Officials suspect a pre-existing medical condition caused the man's death Sunday night.

A 66-year-old Coronado man died Sunday night after the Ford Ranger he was driving crashed into a freeway center divider, leaving him unconscious and slumped over in the driver's seat.

The man, whose name was not released, was driving a dark colored Ford Ranger on southbound Interstate 5 north of Cesar Chavez Boulevard around 9:45 p.m. Sunday when he crashed into the center divider wall, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. A CHP officer broke one of the windows and found the driver had no pulse and didn't appear to be breathing. He was unconscious and slumped over in the driver's seat.

An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer helped the CHP officer remove the man from the vehicle and perform CPR. Paramedics soon arrived and continued, transporting the man to Sharp Coronado Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:42 p.m.

"A medical examiner's autopsy is pending, but the preliminary cause of death is thought to be from a pre-existing medical condition," the news release stated. Alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash.
