Intriguing Topic on Tap for Friday’s ‘Wine & Lecture’ Event

On Friday, July 19, author and professor Sandee Bonura will present an extraordinary lecture about her research into the fascinating letters of Carrie Prudence Winter. The free event will take place in the Lecture Hall at the Coronado Museum of History & Art at 5:30 p.m.

In the 1890s and the first years of the twentieth century, Ms. Winter was in Hawaii as a correspondent reporting on the turbulent Hawaiian Revolution, but she was also in love with one of the founders of the University of California’s Marine Biological Station in Coronado (that would grow to become the Scripps Institute of Oceanography).

Along this unusual axis are woven stories of early Coronado, Hawaiian kings, “Big Sugar” money, the Spreckels family, and a long-distance courtship, all told through the pen of a thoughtful observer well before her time.

Dr. Bonura’s family worked at North Island for decades, and she is currently a professor at Point Loma’s Nazarene University. Dr. Bonura will bring copies of her book, “An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands,” for sale and signing.

This next event in CHA's on-going “Wine & Lecture Series” is free to the public. Wine will be available for a $5 donation. No RSVP required. The Coronado Museum of History & Art is located at 1100 Orange Avenue.
