Gourmet Hot Dog Stand Opens at Ferry Landing

On a vacation trip to Coronado three years ago, the Kinzel family were so taken with the Crown City they decided to move here from Arizona.

"We just absolutely love Coronado. We came to visit a couple times and eventually we said 'Life's too short. It's our dream to live here. its such a great Mayberry-type community," said Alan Kinzel.

On Wednesday Mayor Casey Tanaka cut the ribbon to mark the grand opening of Mickey's of Coronado, a gourmet hot dog stand at the Coronado Ferry Landing.

People have been so welcoming, Kinzel said, that he said he wanted to start a business in part to give jobs to local teens and college students. Eight people work at the stand thus far, but more may be hired if business picks up, Kinzel said.

The name of the hot dog stand is a combination of the names of Kinzel's two sons Nicholas and Matthew.

"It's different and unique and then the cart is actually decorated with postcards of the bridge to give it a very local feel," he said. "Coronado's given so much to us in terms of CoSA and everything."

As the family started over in Coronado, one of his sons started the ninth grade at Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA). A welcoming, safe environment at CoSA let him blossom, Kinzel said.

"Now he's a totally different kid. He's just so inspired and motivated," he said.

The business offers hot dogs and Polish sausages with toppings far beyond ketchup and mustard. Patrons can get a dog topped with locally made coleslaw or sauerkraut, mango chutney, pineapple or apple relish, bacon ketchup and more. 

Hot dogs and sausages are available in traditional and pretzel buns.

Mickey's is Coronado's latest choice for gourmet hot dogs. Last May Delux Coronado Gourmet Hot Dogs opened in the 900 block of Orange Avenue.

When he isn't running the hot dog stand, Kinzel operates Real Estate Auction Angels.
