Gas Prices Leap to $4—And Are Still Climbing

Fuel prices rose again Sunday after jumping the $4 threshold for the first time since mid-June.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose 2.6 cents Sunday to $4.07, one day after passing the $4 mark for the first time since June 14.

The average price has risen 28 times in the past 31 days, increasing 39.4 cents over that span, including 5.2 cents on Saturday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price is 20.6 cents more than one week ago, 39.4 cents higher than one month ago and 31.8 cents greater than one year ago. It is at its highest level since June 12.

Most of the recent increases are the result of Monday night's major fire at the Chevron refinery in Richmond which caused wholesale gasoline prices to rise on of fears of decreased supply.
