Coronado Earns Two Orchid Awards
Two Coronado properties earned design and architectural excellence recognition from the San Diego Architectural Foundation at its annual Orchids and Onions Awards gala earlier this month.
The City of Coronado is pleased to announce it has received "Orchid" design awards for two development projects; one that is new to the community and one that was recently renovated.
The awards were handed out at the San Diego Architectural Foundation's annual Orchids and Onions Awards held Oct. 3 at Balboa Park to honor architecture, interior design, landscaping, public art and historic preservation.
Both projects—the Coronado Club Room and Boathouse and the Village Theatre—have brought much excitement to Coronado. Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka, City Manager Blair King, Recreation Services Director Linda Rahn and Five Star Theatres owner Lance Alspaugh attended the presentation and accepted the awards. King said the City is proud to have had a hand in both projects.
"We were able to provide a much-needed recreation space to the community that didn't previously exist with the new Club Room and Boathouse at Glorietta Bay Park," King said. "The City also is proud of its involvement in seeing our beloved 1947 movie house polished into the attractive gem that it is today. Both projects created vital space for our community to recreate and be entertained."

Coronado Club Room and Boathouse

The Club Room and Boathouse was the final phase of the Glorietta Bay Civic Center and Promenade Project. The 5,000-square-foot facility provides storage for paddle vessels, space for recreational programs and administrative offices. The building has become the go-to place for youth, with day camps and teen programs year-round.

Jurors called the Club Room and Boathouse "a beautiful, thoughtful building that builds upon a vocabulary of elements already in the city, which could have been constraining, but was instead taken to a new level of excellence." Jurors also said the project is "well used and succeeds because it is so popular with the community. It hits every mark; the social importance and design elements create a successful and beautiful structure that will be enjoyed by the community for years to come."
The Village Theatre

The Village Theatre brought a new vitality and created a catalyst for revitalization to the entire downtown area.
Jurors agreed that kudos were in order for the City for its part in restoring the theater: "The architects were able to preserve the Art Deco design elements, incorporate murals in the theaters and maintain a streetscape that keeps the small-town feel of Coronado." They also said that the project was a "perfect example of the community rallying around an idea" and the City responding "with an excellent adaptive re-use of the existing theater after many years of disuse."
