Consumer Alert: Bumble Bee Recalls Chunk White Albacore, Chunk Light Tuna

The San Diego company has warned consumers that 5-oz. cans with certain codes could be sealed improperly.

Bumble Bee Foods has announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall on specific codes of five-ounce Chunk White Albacore and Chunk Light Tuna products.

The recall, first announced on Wednesday, was issued by the San Diego company because the products sold between Jan. 17 and March 6 don't meet Bumble Bee's standards for seal tightness.

Loose seals or seams could result in product contamination and lead to illness if consumed, according to Bumble Bee. The company said there have been no reports to date of any illness associated with these products.

“We must assure our consumers and retailers of a safe and quality product so we very much appreciate everyone's part in disposing of the products with the specific codes indicated,” said Steve Mavity, Bumble Bee's senior vice president of technical services and corporate quality assurance. “We're voluntarily recalling products to ensure the highest margin of safety and quality.”

The company released a long list of product lot codes included in the recall. Codes on cans at home should be checked against the list.

Consumers who believe they have an affected product should throw it away.

They also can direct questions on the recall or reimbursement to a 24-hour dedicated recall line at (888) 820-1947.
