Race Cars to Cruise Orange Avenue Ahead of Coronado Speed Festival

"The Race at the Base" is in its 16th year, and features family friendly activities.

Get a peek at the hot wheels rolling into the Coronado Speed Festival during a parade cruising along Orange Avenue in the 5th Annual Car Procession taking place Thursday.

Event organizers say 40 hand-selected vintage race cars will wind their way through town from Naval Air Station North Island beginning at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon in the traditional preview of the weekend's "fast and furious" festival.

The Coronado Speed Festival is a military-hororing event open to all car enthusiasts. "The Race at the Base" is in its 16th year, and features family friendly activities such as a tour of the supercarrier USS Reagan, and a Kid Zone featuring bounce houses and zip lines, and a Navy Open House. The base is home to some 20,000 active-duty military and 4,000 employees.

Racing events include the Mazda MX-5 Cup. There will also be a car show and car club displays, and test drives.

This year's event is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911. Legendary driver Tony "A2Z" will serve as Honorary Grand Marshall. His career includes winning the 1968 Trans-Am Championship in the Milestone Racing Porsche 911.

“I am honored to be the Grand Marshal for this prestigious event. This is a great venue to introduce many people to the excitement of these vintage race car—to see them firsthand, hear the sounds and really affect them as individuals,” he said.  “I’ve always been a fan of Navy aircraft and carriers. My original dream was to be a Navy pilot, able to land on an aircraft carrier.”
