Week in Review: Tragedies at Spreckels Mansion

The community's summer idylls are disturbed by the deaths of a boy and young woman, both connected to Arizona mogul Jonah Shacknai.

We introduced the and planned an update on (the Coronado resident, who climbed El Capitan despite having cerebral palsy, lost out Wednesday to a collegiate wrestler in the ESPN show's best disabled male athlete category).

But so much changed last week as detectives descended upon the Spreckels mansion early Wednesday after Rebecca Zahau, 32, was found naked and bound on the historic property. The homeowner's brother told investigators he had spotted the dead woman hanging from the mansion's second-floor balcony.

It was soon learned that the owner, wealthy Arizona businessman Jonah Shacknai, had a son who suffered serious injuries in a fall down a staircase just two days before Zahau's death. The family said Sunday that Max, 6, died of his injuries.
