Obese While Pregnant — San Diego Programs Promote Healthy Birth

The idea used to be that pregnant woman should be allowed to indulge their food cravings, because after all, they were eating for two. But now, doctors are much more careful about advising pregnant woman to eat healthy and make sure they don't gain too much weight. That advice is even more important for women who are overweight or obese before they get pregnant.

There are additional risks for both mother and baby when the mom-to-be is significantly overweight including gestational diabetes mellitus, hypertension, preeclampsia, cesarean delivery and postpartum weight retention.

Healthy Women Healthy Children is a new program offering support, nutritional education, access to a gym and personal trainer to help women who are overweight and pregnant or who are getting ready to start their family.
