Local Center for Wounded Veterans Purchases Property

Freedom Station USA offers transition services to those being treated at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

An organization that has been leasing a complex of cottages in Golden Hill, where wounded veterans live while transitioning to civilian life, has announced it has purchased the property.

Freedom Station USA has leased the 12-unit complex, which is close to Naval Medical Center in Balboa Park, since May 2011.

"With this purchase, we can continue to meet the needs of our military heroes and ensure their successful transition to self-sufficient, productive and contributing members of society," said Sandy Lehmkuhler, founder and president of the organization. "It is our hope to eventually open additional facilities in the San Diego area."

The location of the facility allows residents to continue outpatient treatment while awaiting discharge, looking for work and applying to college, according to Freedom Station.

Financial terms of the purchase were not disclosed. However, it was previously reported that the property was worth $2.2 million, and that Freedom Station was paying $16,000 per month for its lease and operations.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
