Flower Show Looking for a Few Good Men

The first-ever beer garden at the Coronado Flower Show will feature Coronado-made brews.

The Annual , on April 16-17, is now in its 86th year. This year, for the first time, the event will feature a Beer Garden under the tents, in an effort to attract more men. Members of the Island Beer Club will be serving the homegrown brew.

“We often see husbands a little less enthusiastic about the Flower Show than their wives,” said Rob Crenshaw who, along with his wife Laura, is co-chair of the Flower Show. “Having a Beer Garden gives them another option.”

Gregor Shanks, co-chair of the Committee, broached the idea last year. Crenshaw and their organizing committee are hoping the addition of a Beer Garden will also create more revenue for the Flower Show.

The Beer Garden will cover about 600 square feet, accommodate up to 72 people at a time and be located under the main tent. Visitors age 21 or older can purchase drink tickets two at a time outside the tent. Beer and wine will be sold at $4 a glass.

“We will be exclusively serving beer made by our own ,” said Crenshaw. “The Chapman brothers (owners of CBC) are donating much of the beer and have indicated they are interested in being involved with us in the years to come. We feel a Coronado brewed beer for the Coronado community will be the perfect match.”

"We're delighted to support such a wonderful Coronado tradition,” said Ron Chapman of the Coronado Brewing Company. “My family has been involved in one way or another for generations with the Flower Show and the home front competition.”

The show’s organizers said they hope their hunch is right and the beer garden will become a tradition for years to come.

Two of CBC’s most popular beers will be served on draft, the Islander IPA and Orange Avenue WIT. The IPA has an intense hop bitterness and medium body and the WIT is made from California orange peel and local orange blossom honey.

“We’ve created a special brew just for the Flower Show,” Crenshaw said. “We’re calling it our ‘Coronado Flower Show Blend,’ which is a combination of the Islander IPA and Orange Avenue WIT. It’s actually quite delicious.”

The Coronado Flower Show will be open Saturday, April 16, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $5.
