Coronado Prepares for The Great and Powerful Oz Con International

Oz Con is a "Wizard of Oz" convention celebrating L. Frank Baum and the Oz books.

The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is busy preparing Coronado to be the host site of Oz Con International, from August 1-7, featuring a number of events related to “The Wizard of Oz” and author L. Frank Baum.

The event will be held the week before Winkie Con 2014, the annual celebration of all things Oz that is celebrating 50 years and will be held in San Diego from August 8-10.

Oz Con International will be a community festival highlighting Coronado’s special connection to the author. Baum often stayed at the Hotel del Coronado, writing at least three of his Oz books while there. He also rented a home just a block from the Del on Star Park Circle.

The Coronado event features children’s camps, a musical cabaret at the Coronado Playhouse, an Oz exhibition at the Coronado Public Library, a screening of the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz 3D” at the Coronado Village Theatre as well as other events such as lectures and tours of Baum’s Enchanted Island.

On August 2, the Cultural Arts Commission and Coronado MainStreet present “Celebrate Oz!” a free community festival sponsored by Del Coronado Realty.
