Classic Cars of All Shapes and Sizes Take Over the Streets of Coronado

The 21st-annual MotorCars on MainStreet is held on Sunday, drawing big crowds to see the classic rides.

Classic car owners and their toys descended on Coronado this weekend for Sunday’s MotorCars on MainStreet event, a chance to see hundreds of show-worthy cars lined up along Isabella Avenue.

The free event drew a big crowd that walked their way from car to car, admiring the exposed engines, some clean enough to eat off of. Awards for various categories were presented to car owners, a raffle was held and live music entertained those who wanted to have a seat and take a break from browsing the beautiful cars.

Local resident Jim Davis had his 1961 Corvette on display, although he described it as a “Frankenstein” because it contains newer parts, including suspension pieces from a 1987 Vette, the year Davis graduated from Hilltop High. The car has become a tribute to Davis’ late father, who graduated from Hilltop in 1961.

“I thought, ‘Wouldn't it be cool to have a ’61 Vette and throw new Vette stuff underneath it?’’’ Davis said.

Stu Blumer came from Cardiff to show off his 1937 Ford two-door Slantback sedan, a burgundy-colored car so spotless it looked like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Blumer finished restoring the car in January and has been hitting car shows and winning awards.

“We had it at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, it took first place. Sacramento Autorama, first place,” Blumer said. “And then at Del Mar Goodguys it won McGuire’s Most Magnificent Masterpiece Award.”

With an engine so spotless that you could see your reflection, the obvious question was how Blumer keeps it so clean.

“Don't drive it,” he said.
