Bridge Back to Normal

Caltrans completes barrier upgrades, so no more lane closures or inconveniences for motorists; project ends days ahead of schedule.

Officials have finished work to replace barriers on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, the city announced, ending partial closures that backed up traffic in the evenings and early mornings, angering some drivers.

Despite pushing back the start time on the nightly construction following complaints, workers completed their task earlier than the 10-day to two-week period initially predicted.

The old concrete sections will remain stacked near the old toll station until they can be recycled, according to Caltrans, which managed the project. The work is not expected to require lane closures.

The project began July 31, but led to such large backups (as witnessed by one KPBS reporter) because of lane and ramp closures that officials immediately shifted the work back one hour each night, to 8 p.m. on weeknights and 9 p.m. on Sundays.

The new schedule was one hour later than originally planned during the week, and two hours later on Sundays. Signs also were added to warn of delays.

The concrete barrier was last replaced 18 years ago. Two machines used to move the barrier four times each weekday, and on weekends when needed. One new machine now can handle the job.
