Two Navy Ships, USS Essex and USNS Yukon, Collide

No injuries and no fuel spills were noted, according to reports.

The amphibious assault ship USS Essex, based in Japan the past 12 years, is scheduled to return to San Diego Thursday, the Navy announced. A mishap occured Wednesday morning, though, according to the Associated Press, when the ship had a minor collision with a replenishment tanker, the USNS Yukon, about 120 miles off local shores. No injuries or major damage was found, the agency reported. The Navy swapped out ships and crews last month. The USS Bonhomme Richard replaced the Essex in Sasebo, Japan, and the Bonhomme Richard's crew is returning the Essex to San Diego, where it used to be based. "I know there are a lot of former crew members and fans of the ship still in the area, so it is going to be a real pleasure to re-introduce 'The Iron…

School Officials Unimpressed by Revised State Budget

Leaders continue to build local campus budgets based on austere projections.

Gov. Jerry Brown's revised state budget proposal changed nothing for school leaders, Coronado's superintendent said. “The revise offered nothing new,” Jeffrey Felix wrote in an email. “The budget is dependent on new money via taxes. Our budget is based on the tax initiatives failing, as required by state regulations. “We will wait until the governor's January proposal to form a clearer budget picture,” he concluded.  School officials have been waiting for the altered budget, known as the “May revise” to judge the impact of lower-than-expected state revenues on funding for education. Leaders from other districts also said the document changes little about the prospects for campuses as the state's budget picture dims. “Nothing has improved …

Benefactor To Donate and Help Maintain Flag at Centennial Park

The City Council voted unanimously to place a large, lighted flag in the gazebo area of Centennal Park, with an assist from county Supervisor Greg Cox, who drew in the donor.

When Supervisor Greg Cox learned last year of retired Vice Admiral Ed Martin’s and Miles Harvey’s efforts to raise funds for a flag at Centennial Park, he knew who to contact – his friend Bob Sutherland. The Bonita resident had long expressed interest in having a large, lighted flag flying along San Diego Bay.  “He didn't hesitate,” Cox said. Sutherland, along with his wife Sue, agreed to pay for the flag on one condition: That it be dedicated to “all the men and women who serve and who have served in the United States military.” A Vietnam War veteran, Sutherland owns several McDonalds franchises in the area, including the one at the Naval Amphibious Base, Cox said.   “This is something to get to be happy about,” said Councilwoman Carrie …

Bilbray Introduces Bill to Fund Skin Cancer Research

Rep. Brian Bilbray co-authors the Melanoma Research Act, which calls for fees on tanning booths; his daughter suffers from the ailment.

A San Diego County lawmaker whose daughter is battling melanoma is the co-author of a bill to provide a public source of funding for skin cancer research. Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, co-authored the Melanoma Research Act of 2012 with Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y. His 25-year-old daughter, Briana, recently underwent surgery in her battle against melanoma. The congressman said people have a one-in-50 chance of developing melanoma in their lifetime, and the rate is higher for those under 30. “While this disease does not discriminate, in the last 40 years the incidence rate has been on the rise with young women,” Bilbray said. “We need a committed source of funding to allow the National Institutes of Health to adequately research this …

Update: Starbucks Withdraws Liquor License Application

The popular chain had focused on Coronado as its first California outlet to serve beer and wine, but the city protested.

Update, 7:15 p.m. Monday with comments from city officials, Starbucks, police and the state.   Starbucks, which is looking to expand in the community, has withdrawn an application to sell beer and wine at its outlet on Orange Avenue. The city announced the development Monday afternoon, after confirmation from the state, which oversees liquor licenses, and a senior manager for government affairs with the popular coffee chain.  The city quoted the Starbucks official, Kim Winston, who said via email that “based on our due diligence process and our respect of the Coronado community, Starbucks took self-selected and proactive actions to pull its application.” The move took place Friday, according to the city. In an email to Patch, a Starbucks …

Final Rites Held for Lt. Mosko

Navy releases photo of private service where the slain officer was laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans.

A day after Coronadans and San Diegans stopped their days to salute Lt. Christopher Mosko's sacrifice, the Naval Amphibious Base officer was laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Mosko's remains arrived at North Island Naval Air Station Thursday, where a brief ceremony was held for his family and colleagues. Then a procession took the group down 4th Street, over the bridge and past Balboa Park to a Hillcrest mortuary. The Fort Rosecrans funeral took place Friday. Mosko served as part of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3, an assignment that has taken on more importance in the military in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, according to a recent piece in the New York Times. The story shines a spotlight on a monument at Eglin …

Tanaka Joins Cyclists for Morning Ride

The Bicycle Advisory Committee launched the first annual Mayor's Bike Ride to shine a spotlight on how to make the bike-crazed community safer for those on two wheels.

When Mayor Casey Tanaka begged off riding in the Mayor’s Bike Ride, because “his dog ate his bike,” laughter filled the City Council chamber. Turned out he wasn’t joking. His dog literally ate his bike. “He ate both tires, the seat and the hand grips,” Tanaka said. “He likes rubber.” Dan Orr of the city's Bicycle Advisory Committee solved the the problem by lending Tanaka a beach cruiser Saturday. “He didn’t look too happy riding it,” cyclist Deborah Callahan observed. “It had a rusty chain. It couldn't have been much fun for him to ride.” This was Tanaka’s first bike ride since the Fourth of July, Coronado’s unofficial “bike everywhere day” because of the crowds who line up for the parade and fireworks show.  But the idea behind the ride …
