The project is a call to veterans, friends and families to have dog tags replicated and included on pillars at the Fleet Reserve Association in Imperial Beach. Donations will help raise funds for organizations that support local vets.
"Thank You" is an eagle with a 7-foot wingspan with armor and feathers made in part with replicas of veterans' dog tags. Artist Cathy Janes said the statue began in 2009 when she asked Fleet Reserve Association Branch 289 in Imperial Beach to put a jar at the bar to collect donations, and ended up with a place to build the sculpture, hundreds of dollars in donations and a helping hand when she needed it. It couldn't have been made without support from local veterans in Imperial Beach, Coronado and elsewhere, she said. "I'm not even from here, and everybody just jumped to help," she said. "At the end I was behind in getting it finished, and sculpting in National City, and two guys with drills in their hands showed up and stayed up all night…

Nearly 70 million votes were cast for the top contestants Wednesday. Sanchez will appear Saturday for shows aboard the USS Midway and in Chula Vista.
A petite Chula Vista teen with a huge voice is among the top three contestants on “American Idol,” and she will perform for county crowds Saturday, including one on a ship just across the bay. Jessica Sanchez, 16, beat out tens of thousands of hopefuls who auditioned nationwide for the 11th season of the popular Fox singing program, including an estimated 9,000 who jammed Petco Park last July. The city of Chula Vista said Jessica, 16, will be escorted by Eastlake High School's marching band and color guard down Eastlake Parkway from Otay Lakes Road to the campus beginning about 10:15 a.m. The celebration will be held at the football stadium. The event is being recorded for air on next week's program. In the afternoon Sanchez will receive a…

Courtenay McGowen, a fixture on Coronado's art scene, is making a splash across the bay.
It’s only been a few months since Courtenay McGowen joined the board of directors at Balboa Park's Mingei International Museum, but she feels right at home. “The whole concept of housing objects that are beautiful, used in everyday life and are collected from all over the globe is right up my alley,” she said of her new role at the celebrated folk art and craft museum. The museum is thrilled to have McGowen. “With her degrees in art history (a bachelor's and masters from Columbia University), she brings a real knowledge to bear,” said Rob Sidner, Mingei's director. “She also has a passion for the arts of daily life.” It can be seen in her own collection, which includes fabrics and body ornaments from Central Asia and Northern India, …

The summer blockbuster with a $220 million budget opens Friday in town and across the region.
The Avengers is playing at the Village Theater. Fan boys and comic book savants have been clamoring for the release of The Avengers ever since it was announced that geek god Joss Whedon was taking over as director. So what should we make of the ridiculously expensive (estimated budget: $220 million) and overhyped collaboration of some of Marvel’s most beloved superheroes? At its worst, it’s a great summertime movie, with enough wit, charm, mandated super-charged action, and authenticity to entertain even the novice viewer who has limited knowledge of the main characters. At its best, it’s a masterstroke from Whedon, which sets the table for a franchise destined to become the next “must-see” phenomenon for years to come. It’s very loud (…

Leigh Scarritt, along with two performers from recent Lamb's Players productions, stars in “Respect: A Musical Journey of Women,” in downtown San Diego.
When you say the word ‘Respect,’ it conjures all kinds of images and associations. But if you SPELL the word, only one thing comes to mind: Aretha. That demand for esteem and equality is at the heart of “Respect: A Musical Journey of Women,” which is playing at the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego through June. At the center of the musical action is the Narrator, played by well-known, multi-talented musical theater performer (and frequent director) Leigh Scarritt, who grew up in Coronado, where she still lives. The show's evolution: The show is the brainchild of Columbia University professor Dorothy Marcic, a former Fulbright scholar and delegate to the U.N. Economic and Social Development Summit. It all began in 1999, when she was asked to …

Retired teacher Kris McClung has brought attention to local programs in arts and education circles, but there appears to be a ways to go as advocates push for more creativity in classrooms.
Update 1:25 p.m. Wednesday: The state took exception to any assertion that officials aren't aware of Coronado's STEAM program and offered more information Wednesday. According to Jim Greco, manager of the California Department of Education office responsible for the coordination of such efforts, other areas are getting on board, including districts in Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Orange and San Diego counties. They have have established centers for similar programs. The department itself is involved in promoting arts education, Greco said, enlisting a consultant who advises on the visual and performing arts. The state also is involved in a number of initiatives, such as Create CA, to return the arts and humanities to the K-12 curriculum…

The PG-13 documentary highlights problems of an estimated 13 million children each year.
It’s authentic, heartbreaking and dynamic. And, for once, the stories of the estimated 13 million children bullied each year are told in a broad way. The highly anticipated Bully is finally released and though the PG-13 documentary is certainly worth watching, stories seem to be only half told. Bully, which had its local premiere last September in the San Diego Film Festival, is showing now at two theaters—at Hillcrest Cinemas and AMC La Jolla Village 12. The film, directed by Lee Hirsch, tells the story of five children from small towns and their struggles with bullying. Two of those profiled—Tyler Long and Ty Smalley—committed suicide at the ages of 17 and 11. Filmmakers interview their parents in the movie. But the movie digs deeper by …

San Diego appeared only briefly in the original “Anchorman,” which actually was filmed in Los Angeles, Glendale and Long Beach, according to Wikipedia. Will you welcome “Anchorman” back? What did you think of the original—and its depiction of mid-1970s San Diego TV news?
