State Arts Conference Set for CoSA

New city arts commission discussed the March event, created to advocate for arts education, and named a chairwoman.

The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) will host a “Create the State” conference on March 30-31, in hopes of fostering improved arts education.

Plans for the event were announced at the Cultural Arts Commission meeting Thursday, by member Kristine McClung.

“Create the State” is an initiative of the California Arts Council to revive arts education. It is linked to Gov. Jerry Brown’s economic development plans “as a way to reduce the dropout rate, increase the graduation rate, and educate kids for creative industry jobsfor the 21st Century.”

Representatives from the state Department of Education, the arts council and the state Parents and Teachers Association are expected to attend.

Participants will “provide input to the state Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson and a blue ribbon committee to devise a blueprint for creative education in California,” McClung said.

The conference is by invitation only, but it will be webcast by CoSA.

Commissioners also selected leaders: Heidi Wilson was named chair and Doug St. Denis, vice-chair.

The panel also established committees, to be overseen by a member:

  • Doris Besikof, visual and literary arts;
  • Stephen Baker, performing arts;
  • Wilson, media;
  • Jeff Tyler, public art;
  • McClung, arts education;
  • St. Denis, public relations and film, and
  • Healy Henderson, arts advocacy.

Baker, Tyler, and McClung were charged with coming up with an application process that offers opportunities for individuals and organizations to have their views heard on the committees.
