Shacknai's Company Notches FDA Win

Medicis Pharmaceutical secures approval for new use of Restylane, a cosmetic enhancer.

Spreckels homeowner Jonah Shacknai, whose extraordinarily troubled summer became the stuff of national news, scored a business victory Tuesday when his company received government approval for a new use of a cosmetic enhancer.

Medicis Pharmaceutical (NYSE:MRX) produces Restylane, a filler used to combat signs of aging, that the Food and Drug Administration now has approved for use in lip plumping.

The company's application received preliminary approval from a FDA panel in April. Shacknai is founder of the Scottsdale-based company, which reported $700 million in revenues last year.

The company has been in the news for other reasons, including as BNET reported, a September settlement of a shareholder suit alleging that Medicis improperly handled stock to artificially boost sales. The company, according to the Arizona Republic, was not required to admit to any wrongdoing as part of the deal.
