Update: Man Who Drowned Was SDSU Grad

His body was found by a diver 40 minutes after he jumped off a boat.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has released the name of a 23-year-old Oakland man who jumped off a boat in San Diego Bay on Saturday and was later found dead. 

Witnesses said Alexander Thomas Glenn jumped off a boat near the San Diego-Coronado Bridge about 6:20 p.m. and never surfaced, Harbor Police Lt. Kirk Nichols said.

A report by the Medical Examiner’s Office stated that Glenn was part of a group of friends that were jumping off a boat into the bay. When he did not surface, a 911 call was placed and San Diego harbor police arrived within minutes.

A search was begun, and a diver found Glenn’s body underwater about 40 minutes later, near the Coronado end of the bridge, Nichols said. He was declared dead at 7:22 p.m. by medics with San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

A noted that Glenn volunteered with the Piedmont Police Department's Explorer program in high school and graduated from Piedmont High School in the class of 2005. He went on to earn his BA in International Business with a concentration in Japanese from San Diego State University in spring 2011.

He participated in many different hobbies such as snowboarding, skateboarding, soccer, and basketball and cultivated a passion for information technology and marketing. He was described as a beloved son, brother, cousin, grandson and friend.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Glenn’s name to the ASPCA.
