Killer Was Legally Drunk at Time of New Year's Shootings

The killer of had a blood alcohol level that left him legally drunk at the time of the shootings, according to autopsy reports released Thursday.

John Robert Reeves' blood alcohol level was 0.16 percent. After using two weapons to shoot his roommate David Reis, 25, Reis' sister Karen, 24, and her friend Matthew Saturley, 31, he turned one of them on himself.

Reeves' autopsy report also noted he had “no known history of depression or suicidal ideation.”

Authorities named after nearly four months of investigation into the early morning Jan. 1 shootings.

Though detectives determined within days of the killings that David and Karen Reis and Saturley were homicide victims and Reeves had committed suicide, they said they wanted to wait for the results of toxicology and other forensic tests before drawing other conclusions.

Investigators said Reeves used a a Springfield Armory M1 30-06 caliber rifle to kill Karen Reis and Saturley and a Taurus PT1911 .45-caliber ACP pistol to kill David Reis and himself.

The autopsy reports offer details of a gruesome scene, and describe heavy damage done to wood and plaster fixtures from the number of shots fired.

According to the forensic examinations, the Reis siblings also had been drinking during an evening of clubbing with Reeves and another friend. Karen Reis met Saturley at the club and he joined the group for their return to Coronado. 

David had a blood alcohol level of 0.14 and Karen 0.17 percent. Saturley, of Chula Vista, had not been drinking. 

There were no signs of drugs in the systems of any of the deceased, according to the autopsies. Their times of death are listed as 2:20 a.m. Jan. 1.

Detectives said Wednesday that Reeves entered the condo he shared with fellow Navy pilot David Reis, armed himself and waited to attack. The autopsy reports indicate he chose the third-floor bedroom where Karen had been staying as a guest.

He shot Saturley five times, once in the face and four times in his back. Karen was shot twice, in her face and chest. David was shot in his back, hand and thigh, as he entered the residence after hearing the shots.

The surviving member of the party saw David lying facedown in the doorway and fled to call for help.

Detectives said they could could not determine a motive in the killings, but the autopsy reports indicate the survivor told investigators Reeves may have been romantically interested in Karen Reis.
