‘Party in Pink’ This Weekend

Leave the Halloween shenanigans for Monday. Join a Zumbathon fundraiser Saturday instead.

You may have been seeing a lot of pink lately, thanks to October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A local fitness center is following suit and ending the month with a pink party for the cause, part of a nationwide effort to use a popular workout to raise money to battle breast cancer.

Coronado Training Center (CTC) is hosting a Zumbathon, with proceeds from the dance-a-thon going toward the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The center's group fitness instructor, and the event organizer, Shea Hawthorne, said she felt like the community needed to do its part during the month.

“It’s such a great cause,” Hawthorne said. “And every little bit helps.”

If you don’t know much about the dancing exercise known as Zumba, Hawthorne explains it as the ultimate cardio workout, focused on cultural dances.

“[Zumba] is a dance-based fitness program that centers around international rhythms,” Hawthorne said. “It’s fitness in disguise!”

Hawthorne said you can burn anywhere between 600-1000 calories during an hour Zumba workout. That's reason enough to try it out!

Dan Boyle, the center's owner, volunteered the time and space for the cause. He calls Hawthorne the “Zumba diva.”

The “Party in Pink” Zumbathon is Saturday at the Training Center, 126 B Ave., from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and space is limited.

Guests can get a workout with refreshments to follow for a $20 donation. All proceeds will go directly to the Komen foundation. Hawthorne, who will lead the class, is asking all guests to bring a water bottle and towel and to wear their pink workout clothes to get into the spirit. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in.

Call Hawthorne at (619) 347-5497 to reserve a spot or try your luck at the door. There are 30 spots open for the Zumbathon. Donations are welcome if you’d like to come and just watch the Zumba madness!
