April Pools Day Teaches Kids and Parents About Water Safety

A U.S. Navy SEAL gives kids a lesson in pool safety.

May is National Drowning Prevention Month, and in preparation, the Coronado Community Center hosted a special event all about water safety.

April Pools Day is a nationwide initiative that teaches kids about safe swimming. Being cautious and prepared around water is especially important with young children, according to Mary Downing of Pool Safety Mom. Downing said most children who drown are only 1 or 2 years old.

A U.S. Navy SEAL led Saturday’s class in Coronado and shared some of his water techniques with attendees.

His safety tips included:

  • Always have a swim buddy.
  • Have the right equipment, such as a lifejacket.
  • Be prepared and know ahead of time what you plan to do once you are in the pool, such as treading water, playing volleyball or swimming laps.

The SEAL showed kids how to put on a lifejacket and how to ensure a proper fit. Once they were in the pool, he had them relax and float to get comfortable. He then asked the kids to swim back and forth across the pool, using the sidestroke.

The event was sponsored by nine vendors, including the American Red Cross, Pool Safety Mom and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.

There are three upcoming April Pools Day events—one in La Mesa, Santee and Clairemont. All classes are free and held at community pools. Activities vary based on location, but most events include swim lesson, CPR demonstrations and a chance to swim with a Navy SEAL. Call your local community center for details.
