A Great Escape that Reminds Us to Be Thankful

Spring break is the perfect time to enjoy quality time with our families. Here's an activity that will remind us of all we have to be grateful for.

It's spring break! Is everyone enjoying their time off? I know I am. It's weeks like this that remind me of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place. Seeing all the spring break tourists in town reminds me that some families save all year to visit our little town. In fact, most will never get a chance to see our slice of paradise. I am truly grateful to live the life I have.

In honor of those that are not so fortunate, this week's Great Escape isn't about getting away from the house and taking time for ourselves. It's about giving our time to someone else.

Did you know 49.5 percent of children in public school in San Diego County utilize the schools' Free and Reduced Price Lunch program? That's almost half the children in the San Diego County public school system. Half!

The Free and Reduced Price Lunch program is a fantastic program during the week, but what happens when kids are away from school over the weekends? That is where Feeding America San Diego steps in.

Their BackPack program provides food-insecure children with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food every Friday to help them meet their nutritional needs through the weekend and over holiday breaks- like the spring break we are all enjoying right now.

Feeding America San Diego has a brand new 44,000 square foot distribution center in Sorrento Valley. To celebrate, they are hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will feature tours of the center, light refreshments, a performance by a local stomp group and several activity stations for kids and families. Kids can decorate bags and stuff them with food for the BackPack program, and parents can donate $100 for their children to permanently leave their mark on Feeding America San Diego by decorating tiles to line the "Feeding Kids" area at the distribution center.

I can't think of a better way to enjoy the extra family time this week than by giving back to the needy families in our very own hometown.

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!
